ABSTRACT

The chapter represents the heart of the on-site survey carried out in 2016. It presents in detail the four selected neighbourhoods of Pemba (Paquitequete, Natite, Alto Gingone and Chuiba) with a description of the settlements, their geographic conditions and demographic aspects. The neighbourhoods are analyzed at various scales to produce a typo-morphological analysis, always keeping the parallel among them in order to carry out a continuous comparison. In this chapter, the large part of the graphic and photographic apparatus selected for this book can be found.

Therefore, the chapter begins with a description of the tools used for the survey of spaces and functions within houses and the methods used for the representation and interaction with the community. This is followed by an analysis of the origins and recent developments of the neighbourhoods, highlighting the changes in the architectural elements and characteristics. The analysis of the urban morphology is followed by the study of the surveyed houses, going into the architectural details of the construction materials and elements up to the most common objects. This analysis is accompanied by the survey sheets with the drawings and photographs of the houses’ private spaces and portraits of their inhabitants. The houses’ analysis ends with the determination of the neighbourhoods’ prevailing typologies. This determination also allows a comparison with the traditional house type to enhance comprehension of the elements of variance and permanence. The city imposes new models of living and therefore new architectural features, but self-building emphasizes the ability of citizens to create spaces that reflect the local culture of living.
