ABSTRACT

The final chapter focuses on the challenges of self-built houses in the surveyed case study. The chapter identifies the opportunities at two scales: that of the house and that of the city and proposes ways to improve and use the detected prevailing house typology for the city’s development. This is because Pemba’s prevailing house type represents a widespread competence, and therefore, resources among the inhabitants are representative of the local cultural identity and therefore needs to be protected and enhanced as part of the local cultural heritage.
