ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the ideology that character problems are actor gifts. It teaches the actor to change their perspective when examining a script by focusing on finding as many obstacles as possible for the character. We often don’t crave problems in our day-to-day lives, but the character must dig up the conflict and put it on the film and television screen in a dramatic or comedic script. People go to the circus to watch the tightrope walker fall, not get to the other side. And this chapter makes finding obstacles fun! It provides examples from the movies Bridesmaids and Silver Linings Playbook, starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.
