ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a case study of James D. Smrtic as a means to explore what it means to be a multicultural humanistic psychologist. Multicultural humanistic psychology is a paradigm that focuses on the culturally relative self-actualization processes of the person and utilizes the multicultural diversities within the global community as foundational resources to promote holistic well-being and growth-promoting relationships to actualize the potentialities of humanity. The author briefly explains how he came to know Mr. Smrtic and the after-school program Kidz n’ Coaches as a means to introduce readers to multicultural humanistic psychology and the author’s motivations for writing Empowering Children: A Multicultural Humanistic Approach. This chapter also contains a multicultural disclaimer that informs readers of the book’s multicultural orientation when it discusses issues of culture, race, and privilege.
