ABSTRACT

The biography of James D. Smrtic reveals the mindset of a multicultural humanistic psychologist. This chapter explores the childhood and educational experiences of Professor Smrtic, as well as his after-school involvement with running a chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters from his position at Mohawk Valley Community College. As he realized that the program was not a good fit for his students, this chapter explains how he created his own after-school program called Kidz n’ Coaches. This chapter explores the beginnings of this multicultural humanistic psychological program and its theoretical tenets. The author also explores contemporary after-school initiatives around the country as a means to place Kidz n’ Coaches into the conversation.
