ABSTRACT

The humanistic psychological concept of ‘facilitator’ is important for leadership and the success of group functions. Developed by humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers in his encounter therapy groups, the facilitator is able to share power with the person/group in order to promote and cultivate self-discovery, healing, and growth by providing direction, setting limits, offering resources and relevant knowledge/skills. For the after-school program Kidz n’ Coaches, the college student volunteer Coaches become facilitators of self-actualizing group experiences for culturally diverse children. This chapter explores how Kidz n’ Coaches is a multicultural humanistic psychological program and how empowering college student volunteer Coaches with the role of facilitator is growth-promoting for everyone in the group. The roles of the Coach and Head Coach are explained through examples of exemplary Coaches and successful events.
