ABSTRACT

Relying on the manifesto data provided by the Manifesto Project (MARPOR) – former Comparative Manifestos Project (CMP), this chapter assess the political positions promoted by VOX, focusing on the categories that are more salient in its April 2019 electoral programme. It is dedicated to the analysis of the lines of conflict that have structured the Spanish party system. The chapter focuses on a comparison of VOX’s programme with those of other well-known populist radical right parties in Europe as well as populist leaders in other countries such as Donald Trump in the United States, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, and Jose Antonio Kast in Chile. It envisages the analysis of the relevant dimensions of political competition in Spain. The chapter compares VOX with other populist radical right parties or actors in Western Europe, the United States and Latin America in terms of issue salience.
