ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to be a first approximation of the study of VOX’s stance on democracy both from the supply and the demand perspective. It examines the relationship between PRRPs and democratic support at the theoretical level. The chapter focuses on the supply side, analysing the relationship between VOX and democracy by examining its leaders’ public interventions and the party’s electoral programme. It is dedicated to the analysis of the relationship between the populist radical right and democracy from the perspective of voters. This demand-side analysis combines a descriptive and explanatory perspective to help understand the relationship between support for democracy and voting for PRRPs and, in particular, VOX. The chapter discusses the possible relationship among a recent authoritarian past, anti-democratic sentiments, and the propensity to vote for VOX. VOX’s flirtation with a romanticized image of pre-transition Spain, consciously or not, attracts the support of those voters who do not fully endorse democracy.
