ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter returns to the main puzzle that forms the basis of the book, namely: why are right-wing populist parties more successful in some countries than in others? First, this chapter summarises the key findings and highlights the factors that help explain the variation in the electoral performances of the populist radical right in each of the Benelux polities. It then discusses the wider implications of the findings by tentatively ‘testing’ the theoretical framework on other cases (notably France and Germany). Finally, this chapter proposes some concluding remarks by linking the findings to related themes and tangential fields of research, including media research and democratic theory, and points to potential avenues for future research.
