ABSTRACT

In dialogue with the cultural turn, Godard explores the entangled practices of translation and/in theatre. Adopting an anti-mimetic approach to language and drama, she develops a politicized, semiotic analysis of the citational processes of “repetition with a difference” that lie at the heart of both theatre and translation as performative “transpositions” of one experience/text into another. Drawing on Butler, Derrida, and J.L. Austin, Godard examines translation as “the third term” linking performance (as translation) and performativity (of translation). In the final section, she demonstrates through examples that translations of theatre texts from Quebec into the dominant national Anglo-Canadian context are ideologically driven and bound up with the political economy of cultural exchanges.
