ABSTRACT

This introduction to another of Godard’s own translations is an extended paratext that deconstructs the unitary and coherent autobiographical subject in/of translation through a series of repeated performative stagings, based on the recognition that “texts do not reflect but produce subjects through their socio-linguistic mediation.” Godard notes that through a temporal relay of the journal, “Brossard of 1983 meets many other Brossards,” and there is no unitary self in the crowding of identities – a woman, a lesbian in love, a mother, a feminist, a poet, a traveler, a reader, and a journal writer. The political subject, the phenomenological subject, the textual subject – all exceed themselves, all are functions of thought, emotion, and lived experience.

The practice of translation then becomes a mode of actualizing the virtuality of reading in an effort to produce a “redistribution of linguistic value.”
