ABSTRACT

This is one of Godard’s most influential essays, in which she articulates a theory of feminist translation as feminist poetics. A feminist theory and practice of translation as “re/reading and re/writing” draws attention to the translational character of all feminist writing, while at the same time foregrounding the visibility of the translator’s manipulation of the text, or what she calls “womanhandling” of the text. In this way, feminist translation as “creative transposition” breaks the illusion of transparency of the text and crosses the boundary between writing and theory, viewing translation as a creative process that involves the production of new knowledge.
