ABSTRACT

Drawing on theories of Bourdieu and Lefevere, this essay examines the processes of selection and canonization of translated literature from Quebec in English Canada. Godard contends that despite innovative experimentation by francophone feminist writers like Brossard and Théoret, the norms of English Canadian literature remain unaltered. By focusing on the interlinguistic dialogues between anglo- and francophone feminists, Godard performs her own theoretical intervention in the field, naming translation as a figure of working-through the fictions of Canadian cultural monolingualism.
