ABSTRACT

People tend to believe that, generally speaking, they are better than others (Alicke & Govorun, 2005). Yet, how does this belief correspond to their expected behavior in the course of Milgram’s experiment? In the course of the studies conducted on a randomly selected representative sample, we checked how people think they would behave when subjected to Milgram’s procedure. What is important here is that we also verified the effect the knowledge of the actual results of the studies had on what they thought their behavior would be like. In other words: we wanted to know to what extent the awareness of the fact that people can be cruel and thoughtlessly obedient affects the way we think about ourselves and our behavior.
