ABSTRACT

The commonest view of time is that it ‘flows’ like a river and the ‘river of time’ principle is firmly fixed in the minds. The future is the ‘source’ of the ‘river of time’. An alternative view is that the future has no content at all; it is just the possibility that allows the next present to take place. As such, it is neutral to events that occur and merely provides the context in which the continuing specious present can happen. Albert Einstein’s work on Special and General Relativity, the formulation of quantum mechanics and the increased interest in, and knowledge about particle physics, view of time has changed. Hermann Minkowski coined the term ‘space-time’ with the intention of describing something which is neither spatial nor temporal.
