ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the book with a discussion of empirical evidence. The increasing agency and empowerment of the women are documented with certain challenges. Increasing mobility of the women candidates during election campaigns are noticed as a result of the introduction of direct elections in the reserved seats. Another important contribution of direct elections in the reserved seats is women representatives’ increased voice and agency in public policy making. This chapter also sums up the roles and responsibilities performed by the elected women representatives in the local government institutions. It further examines the effect of the introduction of direct elections in the wider community. It summarizes the challenges women candidates faced in contesting local government elections. Policy implications for further women’s empowerment at the local government institutions based on the study findings are also drawn.
