ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on minds, memories, and meaning and consists of three parts. It begins with a discussion of the effects of crafting and processing fibers on minds and bodies. How did crafting and toiling with their hands work on the minds and bodies of the monastics? In what ways did plaiting and weaving help monastics to become immersed in the biblical world or facilitate a meditative state and help them empty their minds? The second part focuses on how items of clothing not only constituted mediums for healing but also contributed to transmitting knowledge and memories by channeling the senses and feelings of the monastics. The third part discusses how meaning and memory were mentally inscribed on the items of the monastic habits.
