ABSTRACT

This chapter describes female terrorism in left-wing American organizations. Two case studies representing this type of organization are considered: the Weather Underground and the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). The Weather Underground was a radical homegrown terrorist group that operated in America in the late 1960s and 1970s. The SLA was a leftist terrorist organization active in California between 1973 and 1975, which became infamous for the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst, the granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst. In particular, the ideologies of these organizations, examples of their terrorist exploits, their associated acts or collaborations with others, and the key members who led terrorist attacks or helped shape the direction of these groups are discussed.
