ABSTRACT

>This chapter introduces the concept of Ethical Agility, in addition to our Ethical Triad. The core idea of Ethical Agility is that one must not only understand the ideas of the Ethical Triad, but also be able to put them into action. To accomplish that—i.e., to be Ethically Agile in China—on the most basic level requires fluency with two fundamental elements of Chinese thought, behavior, and culture, one of which is “face.” This chapter illustrates Agility with face and applies those concepts together to an important and common business ethics issue—assuring safety and quality in the manufacturing supply chain. This is but one example of an important theme running throughout the book that ethical fluency in being able to understanding and apply traditional Chinese ethics does not mean abandoning one’s preexisting ethical values and business objectives. Rather, ethical fluency can be the most effective way to support those values and achieve your objectives.
