ABSTRACT

Chapter Two presents an overview of the global emergence of community access or grassroots radio and how it was eventually institutionalized in the UK as a very local, niche interest service to complement the established BBC and independent sectors. The expectations placed upon community radio for the provision of locally originated content and social gain are considered alongside issues such as sustainability and funding. The practice-centric methodology applied in this study is then explained as is the value of digital technologies to the research process itself.
