ABSTRACT

Grupo Clarin is a truly successful business group from an economic perspective. But throughout its history, Grupo Clarin has shown many dark spots in several cases coinciding with the most critical periods of contemporary Argentine history. The history of Grupo Clarin is noticeable for its chiaroscuros. Unlike Folha de Sao Paulo, for instance, Grupo Clarin has never been self-critical of its explicit support for all coups d’etat and, in particular, for the last dictatorship in Argentina. The history of Grupo Clarin has been marked by two personalities: Roberto Noble and Hector Magnetto. During the very short period during which neither of them was running the company, the newspaper almost disappeared. In recent years, Grupo Clarin unleashed a gigantic cash flow – relative to the economics of its powerful media group – with the Cablevision-Telecom merger, which was carried out thanks to the policies of former president Mauricio Macri.
