ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses Goleniewski’s outlandish claim that the United States Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger was a Soviet spy. It begins with an account of the Tsar treasure-hunting activities of Peter Bessell, a former Liberal Party MP and close friend of the party leader Jeremy Thorpe. Bessell became convinced that Goleniewski’s claims were true and raised this in the British Houses of Parliament. However, Bessell eventually sided with Guy Richards, Goleniewksi’s former biographer with whom the would-be Tsar was now feuding. The rumor that Kissinger was a Soviet spy would be widely disseminated among the US far right. The chapter concludes by assessing the allegations made by Goleniewski against Kissinger but surmises these to be fallacious and possibly motivated by petty personal grievances.
