ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the last few years of Goleniewski’s time in Polish intelligence which culminated in his eventual defection in Berlin. It discusses the failing state of his marriage and his affair with a German woman called Irmgard Kampf who would defect with him and later marry him in the USA. Goleniewksi’s possible training by the Russian intelligence service is also discussed as well as how he was viewed by colleagues and later espionage writers in Poland. The chapter concludes by describing the specifics of his defection and the devastating impact this had on Polish intelligence.
