ABSTRACT

The Federal government took advantage – for tactical political reasons – of legal possibilities, but these were intercepted by the KGB and puffed up and stretched out in a compromising fashion. Confessions in various memoirs by former spies as well as the release of files in Russian and East German archives has confirmed that the KGB and Stasi vandalized Jewish cemeteries as part of a campaign to discredit West Germany by promoting the idea that the FRG was riddled with ex-Nazis who were once more on the rise. A recent homage to Felfe by Russia’s Sputnik news gives a sense of his importance to the Russians: According to historians of intelligence services, the name of Felfe is on a par with legendary members of the British ‘Cambridge five’ led by Kim Philby as well as the Soviet intelligence agents who helped extract information about the US Manhattan Project.
