ABSTRACT

Chapter three, moving towards a creative corrections approach, argues that there is a shift towards a creative corrections approach to offender treatment that is rooted in positive psychology. This chapter explores the current use of less traditional, creative treatment approaches including mindfulness-based interventions, art and drama-based therapies. Moreover, the chapter considers the theories underpinning these approaches as well as the research on efficacy with high-risk offender populations with complex needs. Further, the limitations and challenges to implementing such creative treatment approaches are explored. Ultimately, chapter three works to present the shift towards a creative corrections approach and presents the significant role of less traditional and creative approaches in offender treatment more broadly. In doing so, this provides context for the upcoming chapters within the second section of this book where the role of music therapy as a component of treatment for high-risk offenders is examined.
