Logic of Morals and Metaphysic of Morals book
The logic of morals, produced from reflection on ordinary moral judgements, suggests that a further degree of coherence must exist. Such a connexion, if it is to be found, may fairly be said to be presupposed by ordinary moral judgements, but discussion of the logic of morals has shown that the connexion cannot be reached directly from an examination of moral judgements themselves. The logic of morals considers the logical relationships implicit in the intentional meaning of moral judgements, in what persons making such judgements assert. The satisfaction of desires, mentioned under ‘beneficence’, includes the desire to know, implied in the asking of a question, and the giving of a truthful answer is therefore an instance of producing good. Like all deliberate infliction of evil, it impedes liberty. The prevalence of deliberately deceitful propaganda is one reason why a totalitarian society is not a free society.
