ABSTRACT
Crime is rare and often committed when there are no witnesses. Since it is difficult to observe crime, we often rely on surveys to collect data. Survey construction is an important part of research, as the wording and order of items could influence respondents’ answers. There are numerous survey distribution options, ranging from face-to-face interviews to telephone interviews; mail, email, or internet surveys; and computer-assisted interviews. Each of these modalities has different strengths and drawbacks. Self-report surveys help us learn about offending behavior and victimization experiences, particularly those that do not come to the attention of law enforcement.
