ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 begs the question – How can we use government policy as a teachable moment and confirmation of commitment to reinforce to our young people that someone is listening and acting? The chapter chronicles the apathy of the past with the increased commitment to climate change from President Biden as he approached the Climate Summit. The Electric School Bus Coalition is working to reintroduce the Clean School Bus Act to eliminate the diesel emission too many children breathe and protects our local air and climate. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in conjunction with Scholastic has created the Magic School Bus Gets Cleaned Up, a progressive update to the popular series that explored the pollution coming from the school bus diesel engine. Pope Francis urges listeners to know it is everyone's responsibility to protect the Earth. Pioneer Alice Waters, an environmental activist, is highlighted for listening and acting. Alice advocates for all public schools to provide organic food and creates a model of that can be reproduced globally in her founding of Edible Schoolyards. The World's Largest Lesson works in partnership with UNICEF to promote the teaching of Sustainable Development Goals throughout the globe.
