ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 creates an overview of the losses kids face in the twenty-first century, and the specific losses related to climate change. It presents the way young people process loss at different developmental stages and relate these losses to the grief they feel about climate change. This includes common behaviors, feelings, and physical signs of grief that adults should know. Pain-based behaviors are addressed as a concept behind acting out. This chapter also includes a case study of a young girl experiencing loss and grief after a natural disaster, techniques to work with her grief, and helpers in the community. The three pillars of trauma-informed care are discussed, as well as recommendations for therapist and educators. These recommendations include play therapy, projective techniques, artwork, and maintaining a resource library.
