ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 stresses the importance of creating age-appropriate dialogues with youngsters beginning at an early age. This chapter establishes a foundation for conversation incorporating understandings appropriate for different developmental stages. This includes concepts and definitions of terms kids can build on that include global warming, climate change, carbon imprint, and so on. Suggestions for ways to talk to young people, developing trust, motivating action for change, responding to questions, and listening to feelings are addressed and definitions provided by NASA Kids and Sesame Street. Maintaining a safe environment for discussion as a child matures is a consistent theme. The environment for ongoing and clear communication can be created by using principles from Carl Rogers that include genuineness, positive regard, empathy, and techniques associated with the creative arts.
