ABSTRACT
Most people do not know that cybersecurity started in academia and moved to the boardroom a little over half a century ago. The first cybersecurity virus started as a prank in a university in the early 70s and became the beginning of computer malware. Fast forward to the introduction of the internet in the early 90s which allows us to connect directly between businesses and consumers that expanded the attack surface exponentially, and to the present day where we have regular state-sponsored cyber-attacks, critical infrastructure attacks, and an economic infrastructure almost totally dependent on protecting its digital assets. This chapter provides a history of cybersecurity started, evolved, and where it is today.
