ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses solely on our study participants’ affective and evaluative reactions to news. During the diary study, we asked our participants to use 23 semantic pairs (e.g, deep-shallow, valuable-worthless, pleasant-unpleasant, happy-sad) to assess and express their reactions to the news that they submitted for our research study. In addition to reporting significant differences in how participants’ evaluative and affective reactions vary by types of news they consume, we also outline how demographic differences influence participants’ evaluative and affective reactions.
