ABSTRACT

What’s new in the third edition is highlighted and the merit of adopting a regional context is explained. The relevance of development theories to the Middle East is considered, together with a discussion of the extent to which the region is unique. Historically the work draws on the economic experiences since World War II after which many of the developmental determinants were established. Geographically the region includes not only the Arab World, but also Turkey, Iran and Israel. Although the Middle East faces many challenges, especially armed conflict, there are also success stories demonstrating what can be achieved in difficult circumstances.
