ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we introduce the Resource Dependence Theory as a possible conceptual framework to investigate cultural proximity. Resource Dependence Theory highlights the importance of external forces for firms to compete in their environment. Directly stemming from Social Capital Theory, it complements such a view, thus representing an important theoretical lens to analyze firms’ social integrations and assets rooted in interactions such as solidarity, trusts, and trustworthiness. The present chapter will provide an overview of social capital theory, as well as a discussion of its implications for innovation management.
