ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Lucas, an Anglo-Australian who is the son of a self-employed plumber. Lucas is articulate in his opinions with a powerful sense of confidence which sets him apart from the other boys in the study. His story centres around an unwavering aspirational trajectory and strong sense of entitlement which gains him access to elite spaces. I focus on how Lucas’s sense of entitlement was bolstered through his experiences as a learner in elite spaces and how he mediates the competitive university culture through a disposition towards traditional working-class values.
