ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Rashid, a Pakistani-Australian who attended a fee-paying Islamic school in the western suburbs of Sydney. Rashid’s life centres primarily on the Muslim community. The Islamic school he attended shares a site with the local mosque. His lack of self-confidence sits alongside familial and cultural pressures from his parents and grandparents to attend a prestigious university. Rashid’s experience highlights his need to balance a conservative Muslim upbringing with Australian mainstream values.
