ABSTRACT

This chapter situates the phenomenon of suicide highlighting its prevalence, actors and factors along with the crucial challenge of doing suicide research. It discusses some theoretical perspectives in the social, psychological, economic and biological domains. It also highlights -important risk groups and risk factors towards suicide vulnerability such as age, gender, marital status, family issues, mental disorders and failures. Chapter also figures out a few characteristics of suicide-attempters, i.e., those who survived suicide and suicide-completers, viz., those who died. Repercussions of suicide on individuals, the family and their coping mechanisms are also highlighted. The last part deals with the study and its methodology, setting and design.
