ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses way forward in dealing with the suicides and asserts concern for treating suicide as a public health issue, by acknowledging its seriousness and need for the appropriate efforts to prevent it. It also explains suicide prevention approaches and various interventions at length. Contours of long-term policy implications with reference to the possible role of various stakeholders in suicide prevention are addressed. Some suggestions include usage of psycho-social autopsy in suicide research, increasing mental health literacy, expansion and up gradation of mental health infrastructure, staff, database and effective role of family, community, cultural-religious organization in suicide prevention. Finally the chapter briefs out mental health legislations in India and revision in the Mental Health Care Act 2017, by proposing some changes in various sections of the Act.
