ABSTRACT

Performance management is often an elusive practice for public health organizations; building a robust performance management culture can be daunting and frustrating. Once agencies and their leaders fully understand the key components of performance management, it can be difficult to see the path from where you are to where want to go. This chapter provides a tool for agencies to rate themselves on where they are in the five stages of performance management. Each stage describes the general characteristics of that stage, guidance on how to transition to the next stage, and resources available to help in the transition. These progression stages can be used to help a health department to understand where they are starting from and understand some strategies to move to the next stage. Once performance management leaders understand where they are and what should come next, they are well-positioned to make progress.
