ABSTRACT

Performance management and performance management systems take on a variety of roles from one public health department to another. The system designed to monitor performance at the agency level and within programs varies across the board. Priorities vary from agency to agency, as do data collection and monitoring abilities. When a public health agency begins the journey of developing a performance management system, they often want to look for best practices identified by another agency of similar size, with similar priorities. This chapter consists of performance management case studies from multiple health departments – ranging from the New Mexico State Health Department, to the large Monterey County Health Department in California, and the Springfield-Greene County Health Department in Missouri. The case studies highlighted within the chapter will demonstrate how each health department took the concept of performance management and customized it to meet their dynamic needs.
