ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 discusses two drafts of Indian national education policies. One is the Draft of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2016 developed by the Government of India and the other is the latest Draft of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2019. The chapter explains the necessity of both the policies and explains how they aimed to improve the quality of education and restore its credibility by focusing on teacher quality. The Draft NEP 2016 seeks to create conditions to improve the quality of teaching, learning, and assessment and to promote transparency in the management of education (GoI MHRD, 2016, p. 14). Reinforcing the importance of quality education in India, Draft NEP 2019 provides an India-centric framework for developing the education sector in the country. Both policies identify the key importance of teacher quality in improving the educator sector of the country. The remainder of the chapter analyses various teacher quality indicators discussed in the policies.
