ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a practical guide for handling the necessary logistics related to equipment management, including planning and budgeting, training and people development, customer services and management, vendor, supplier, and contract management, and spare and material inventory management. It discusses recommended practices of equipment management logistics for both the maintenance functional setup and platform engineering setup. Most of the strategic planning effort for equipment management concentrates on the annual planning and its update cycles. Equipment budgets are typically separated into capital and expense due to US tax laws. In the platform engineering setup, tactical planning is carried out by platform owners with respect to their equipment and the department manager helps with the integration across all the equipment platforms. Many companies are outsourcing the inventory management functions to firms that specialize in logistics and inventory management.
