ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the key indicators that are used frequently in managing equipment support and classifies them into four intuitive categories: equipment performance indicators, process performance indicators, cost performance indicators, and integrated indicators. Equipment performance indicators are the measurements of equipment status or historical trends. The key areas that measure equipment performance are safety, availability, reliability, maintainability, and utilization. Safety indicators are necessary for addressing equipment safety issues and reducing potential safety incidents, such as personal injuries and environmental damages caused by equipment failures or design flaws. The purpose of availability indicators is to monitor overall equipment uptime. They are used for capacity planning to determine the number of machines needed for operations. The maintainability indicators provide statistical averages that measure maintainability: how quickly the equipment can be repaired or assisted. The key process performance indicators are labor productivity, nonproductive downtime, customer satisfaction, and operational quality.
