ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the development of the theory of action in school reform for School as Learning Community at Gakuyo Junior High School. Masaaki Sato aimed to formulate the theory of action in school reform for School as Learning Community. He regarded Manabu Sato’s description of “collaborative learning” among children and teachers as “espoused theory”, defined it as “school philosophy”, and formulated “design theory”. Further, the two changes—that teachers regarded Masaaki Sato’s “design theory” as “espoused theory” and constructed their “theory in use” with their practical responses—became a central concern in school reform at Gakuyo Junior High School.
