ABSTRACT

Both cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy have been built on the importance of different aspects learning from the psychological point of view. In cognitive therapy this has particularly taken the form of giving clients accurate and empowering information about their problems and the way therapy can help with them. A more programme-like version of this aspect has been developed in the form of ‘psychoeducation’ within organisations providing psychiatric services, notably in the treatment of schizophrenia. Judith Beck has developed a cognitive behavioural approach to weight loss, which blends these twin aspects of individually-based and programme-based learning.
