ABSTRACT

This chapter distinguishes between schema identification methods within the general practice of cognitive therapy and within the schema therapy model. The latter mode of therapy includes formal questionnaires that can also be used in any type of therapy. Schema therapy has been described in another volume of the Distinctive Features series, so that the focus of this chapter is on schema identification by observation of the therapy process, during which schema mechanisms are sometimes acted out – and so may be identified and worked through by cognitive therapists. A client example, during which aspects of schema functioning are elaborated with the aid of Guided Discovery through Socratic Dialogue, is offered and discussed.
