ABSTRACT

On 21 August 1979 James McDonough, a columnist for the San Juan Star, wrote that Puerto Ricans on the island ought to use the Puerto Rican community on the mainland 'in the service of the patria'. He added that Puerto Ricans in both places

are truly amazed at the enormous success of Israel to rally Jewish support within the United States in defense of Israeli interests. The mayor of New York and senators of the state of New York are ardent supporters of Israel precisely because they owe their positions to the New York Jewish vote. Newspapers, books, films, television are all rallied to generally defend Israel and to support the idea of a special relationship between the United States and Israel.
