ABSTRACT
Americans did not begin to feel secure about their own political independence until the first quarter of the nineteenth century. They were not entirely sure about it until after the war of 1812 with Great Britain and the proclamation of the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, which happened to be the year in which Ethan Smith wrote his book supporting Jewish restoration in Palestine. As well as Smith there were quite a few American Christians who espoused this idea.
