ABSTRACT

Here the author presents a case which is very common in workplace disputes. Restructuring at any level often leads to conflict. In an attempt to save people’s jobs there is often an attempt to redeploy people. This can result in people being placed in positions for which they have no experience or training. This can lead to resentment from others who feel they would be better placed in that post. In the reflection section, the author draws on existential thought to explore some keys issues within this study. These include the core role of emotions, the human need to be heard, the importance of time and temporality, the experience of anxiety, and the influence of personal values and beliefs. She analyses the case using the existential dimensions of the parties’ relationship to their personal, social, physical, psychological, and spiritual worlds, and how the major existential themes of freedom, uncertainty, and anxiety are important in how the conflict developed, and how it was resolved.
