ABSTRACT
In this case the issue is around child custody. The parties did not come to the mediation through the courts but as private individuals, and their child played a central role in the mediation. The mediator was experienced and trained in working with young people and held the necessary police checks. The mediator reflects on the ethics involved and the need to ensure that all parties to a mediation, regardless of age, are competent to take part. This was a successful mediation which, at the request of the young person, included the agreement to a six-month review.
